Pods and Coils

How pods, coils and refills work together, what wears out first, and how to fix the common problems.

Every pod kit has three parts that do the work: the battery, the pod and the coil. The battery lasts the longest. The pod holds your e-liquid, up to 2ml in the UK. The coil, sitting inside the pod, heats that liquid into vapour, and it's the part that wears out. Most of the questions people ask about pod kits come down to understanding how those pieces relate, and which one to replace when something goes wrong.

Prefilled or refillable

With a prefilled kit, the pod arrives sealed with liquid and a coil inside. When it's empty, the whole thing goes and you click in a new one. Simple, with less choice.

With a refillable kit, you fill the pod yourself from a 10ml bottle. The liquid runs out often and you top it up. What eventually wears out is the coil, either built into the pod or as a separate part you swap. Our guide to pods for vapes explains both types and why pods only fit their own kit, and vape refills sorts out which bottles, pods or coils your kit actually needs.

Coils: the part that decides everything

The coil's resistance, shown in ohms, shapes the draw. Higher-resistance coils give a tight mouth-to-lung draw that suits nic salts. Lower-resistance coils give more vapour and a looser draw. Our vape coil guide explains the numbers, and the mesh coil guide covers the flat mesh elements now used in many pods.

When to replace what

Part Replace when
Prefilled pod It's empty, or tastes burnt near the end
Refillable liquid The level drops near the bottom
Coil, or pod with built-in coil Flavour fades, or tastes burnt with a full pod
Refillable pod shell It cracks, clouds over, or keeps leaking
Battery It no longer holds a charge

How fast you get there varies a lot from person to person. Our guide to how long a vape pod lasts goes through the factors.

Filling and priming

Most problems with refillable pods start at filling time. Fill to just under the max line, close the bung firmly, and give any new coil five to ten minutes to soak. The full method is in how to refill a pod vape.

Fixing common problems

  • Leaking or gurgling. Usually overfilling, a loose bung or a worn coil. See vape leaking for the step-by-step fix.
  • Burnt taste. A dry wick, an unprimed coil or a coil that's done. The vape burnt taste guide helps you tell which.
  • Not firing or no vapour. Often a flat battery, dirty contacts or a flooded coil. Work through vape not hitting.

What goes in the pod

The liquid matters as much as the hardware. Most pod coils suit nic salts and 50/50 blends rather than thick high-VG liquids. Our e-liquid hub covers strengths, nicotine types and VG/PG ratios. If you're still choosing the kit itself, start at the vape kits hub.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between a pod and a coil?

The pod is the small container that holds e-liquid and clips onto the battery. The coil is the heating element inside it. Some pods have the coil built in; others let you swap the coil on its own.

How often should I replace my pod or coil?

When the flavour fades, turns harsh or tastes burnt with a full pod. For many people that's somewhere between a few days and a couple of weeks, but it depends on how you vape and what liquid you use.

Do pods fit any vape kit?

No. Pods are made for specific kits or ranges. Check the pod lists your exact kit as compatible before you buy.
