Refillable Pod Vapes: A Practical Guide

How refillable pod vapes work, how to fill them, how long coils last, and how they compare with prefilled pods on cost, choice and effort.

A refillable pod vape is a reusable vape where you fill the pod yourself from a bottle of e-liquid. The pod has a coil inside, either built in or replaceable, and you keep using it until the coil wears out. You get any flavour from any brand, and running costs tend to be lower than prefilled. The trade-off is a minute of filling and a little upkeep.

How a refillable pod works

The pod is a small plastic or glass reservoir with a fill port, usually under a rubber bung on the side or top. Inside sits a coil wrapped in cotton. The cotton draws e-liquid from the reservoir, and when you inhale (or press the button) the battery heats the coil and turns that liquid into vapour.

There are two main designs.

Pods with built-in coils. When the coil wears out, you throw the whole pod away and click in a new one. Simple, but a bit more waste.

Pods with replaceable coils. The coil pushes into the base of the pod. When it wears out you pull it, push in a fresh one, and keep the same pod. Less waste and usually cheaper per change.

In the UK the pod can't hold more than 2ml of nicotine e-liquid. Refill bottles of nicotine liquid can't be bigger than 10ml, and the maximum strength is 20mg/ml. Those limits come from the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.

Filling it

The basic routine is quick once you've done it a few times:

  1. Pop the pod off the battery.
  2. Open the fill port.
  3. Tilt the pod and slowly fill to just below the max line.
  4. Close the port and wipe away any drips.
  5. If the coil is new, wait five to ten minutes before vaping.

Coil life and why it varies

Coils don't last forever. The cotton slowly clogs with residue from the e-liquid, and the flavour fades or turns harsh. When that happens, it's time for a new one.

How long that takes depends on a few things you control:

  • The liquid. Sweet flavours, especially dessert and candy profiles, leave more residue and shorten coil life. Clear, lighter fruit and menthol liquids are usually kinder.
  • Power. Running a coil hotter than it's designed for wears it out faster.
  • Chain vaping. Taking puff after puff without a pause doesn't give the wick time to re-soak, and that scorches the cotton.
  • Letting the pod run dry. Vaping on a nearly empty pod is one of the quickest ways to burn a coil.

Most people find a coil lasts somewhere between a few days and a couple of weeks. That's a wide range because vaping habits are so different. Our guide to how long a vape pod lasts goes into it further, and if you're getting a burnt taste already, the burnt taste guide explains the fixes.

Choosing e-liquid

Most refillable pod kits use MTL coils, and those pair best with nic salts. Nic salts let you vape at 10mg or 20mg without the throat harshness that freebase has at the same strength. Our nic salt vs freebase guide covers the differences.

Watch the VG/PG ratio too. A 50/50 blend soaks easily into small coils. Very thick, high-VG liquids are meant for bigger sub-ohm tanks and can starve an MTL coil.

Flavour-wise, refillable is where you get choice. Ice fruits like peach ice and iced triple mango will feel familiar if you came from disposables, and straight mints like spearmint are easy on coils. Browse the flavour library to see what's out there.

Refillable vs prefilled

Refillable Prefilled
What you buy over time 10ml bottles plus coils or pods Packs of prefilled pods
Flavour choice Almost unlimited The brand's range only
Effort Filling, priming, coil changes Click and go
Spill risk Small, while filling None
Coil changes Every few days to weeks Coil is replaced with each pod
Waste Small coil or pod A full pod every time
Running cost Usually lower Usually higher

Pros and cons

What's good

  • Any flavour, any brand, as long as it suits the coil.
  • Lower running costs over time for most people.
  • You can fine-tune strength, switching between 10mg and 20mg or mixing your routine.
  • Less waste, especially with replaceable-coil pods.

What's less good

  • Filling takes a minute, and spills happen while you're learning.
  • You need to remember to prime new coils.
  • Coil life depends on your habits, so it can feel unpredictable at first.
  • Carrying a bottle as well as the kit is one more thing in your pocket.

Who refillable suits

Refillable makes most sense if you vape a fair amount, like trying different flavours, or want to keep costs down. It's also the better choice if you plan to gradually lower your nicotine strength, since you can buy whatever strength you want in a bottle.

If you mostly want something that works out of the box, prefilled might suit you better, at least to start with. Plenty of people begin with a prefilled kit and move to refillable once they're comfortable. Our best pod vape guide has real kit examples in both categories.

Questions people ask

How long does a coil last in a refillable pod vape?

There's no fixed answer. It depends on how much you vape, the power, and the e-liquid. Sweet, dark liquids wear coils out faster. Many people get somewhere between a few days and a couple of weeks. Change it when the flavour goes flat or tastes burnt.

Can I put any e-liquid in a refillable pod?

Any e-liquid that suits the coil. High-resistance MTL coils work best with nic salts and 50/50 liquids. Thick, high-VG liquids can struggle to soak into small MTL coils.

Do I need to prime a new refillable pod?

Yes. After filling a new pod or fitting a new coil, leave it for around five to ten minutes so the cotton soaks through before your first puff. Skipping this is the most common cause of a burnt first hit.

Is a refillable pod vape cheaper than prefilled?

Usually, yes, over time. You pay for e-liquid by the bottle and only replace a small coil or pod every so often, rather than paying for a new prefilled pod each time.
