If you used disposables, the easiest switch is a prefilled pod kit: a rechargeable battery with pods that come already filled. It feels almost the same, with an auto-draw and a tight draw, and you can still get 20mg nic salts. If you're happy to fill a pod from a bottle, a refillable pod kit costs less to run and gives you far more flavours. Either is a legal disposable vape alternative under the UK rules that came in on 1 June 2025.
What you're actually trying to replace
It helps to be specific about what you liked about your disposable. For most people it comes down to five things:
- no setup, just inhale
- a tight, cigarette-like draw
- 20mg nic salt strength
- bold, sweet or icy flavours
- small enough for a pocket
A good alternative keeps as many of those as possible. The two main options both manage most of them.
Option one: prefilled pod kits

Think of these as a disposable where you keep the battery. You click a sealed pod onto a rechargeable base, vape until the pod is empty, then click on a new one. Every new pod comes with a fresh coil, so flavour stays consistent.
What carries over from disposables:
- auto-draw, MTL feel
- 20mg nic salts in most ranges
- zero filling
What changes:
- you charge the battery
- you're tied to one brand's pods
Examples you'll find in UK shops include Elf Bar's ELFA Pro and Lost Mary's BM6000, both from brands that used to sell disposables. That's why they're often the first stop for anyone after an Elf Bar alternative or a Lost Mary alternative. Our prefilled pod vape guide goes into how they work and what to check before buying.
Option two: refillable pod kits
Here you fill an empty pod from a 10ml bottle of e-liquid. Any compatible nic salt works, from any brand, so if your favourite disposable flavour isn't sold as a pod, there's a good chance someone makes a similar bottled version.
What carries over:
- MTL draw, often with auto-draw
- 20mg nic salts
- pocket size
What changes:
- you fill the pod every so often
- you prime new coils (a few minutes' wait)
- you change the coil or pod when the flavour fades
The upside is running cost and choice. Most people find it cheaper over time, and the flavour options are much wider. Read our refillable pod vape guide for the details, and our how to refill a pod vape walkthrough if you've never done it.

Matching your old flavour
Disposables leaned heavily on a few flavour families, and they're all easy to find in pod form or as bottled nic salts.
If you vaped ice fruits, look at things like banana ice, peach ice or iced triple mango. If you were a blue razz person, ice blue raz lemon is in the same territory. Mint fans can go cold with cool mint or softer with spearmint.
Our best vape flavours guide sorts flavours by family, and the full flavour library has notes on each one.
Common problems in the first week
Switching isn't always smooth. These are the things people run into.
"It doesn't hit the same"
Coils and recipes vary, so a new kit won't feel identical. Check the airflow. If it's wide open, close it down for a tighter, more disposable-like pull. And check the strength. If you were on 20mg, stay on 20mg for now.
"It tastes burnt"
On a refillable, this usually means the new coil wasn't left to soak, or the pod is nearly empty. On a prefilled, it often means the pod is finished. Our burnt taste guide covers each cause.
"It's leaking"
Refillable pods can leak if they're overfilled or left on their side in a warm pocket. Fill to just under the max line and wipe the base before clicking it back on.
"I keep forgetting to charge it"
That's normal for ex-disposable users, who never had to think about charging. Top it up when you charge your phone and the problem goes away.
What to get on day one
Whichever route you take, a few things make the first week easier.
For a prefilled kit, buy a spare pack of pods in the same flavour as the starter pod, so you're not caught short when the first one runs out. Check the charging cable is in the box, and charge the battery fully before you start.
For a refillable kit, pick up two 10ml bottles: one flavour you know you'll like and one to try. Make sure they're nic salts at the strength you used before. Grab a spare coil or pod as well, because the first one sometimes gets burnt while you're learning to prime it.
Either way, set aside the old disposables you still have for take-back rather than the bin.
Which should you pick?
If you want the least change possible, go prefilled. If you're willing to spend a minute filling a pod, refillable will give you more flavours for less money over time. Plenty of people start prefilled and switch to refillable a few months later. Our best pod vape guide has real UK examples of both, and if you're new to vaping entirely, start with our best vape for beginners guide.
One last thing: don't throw old disposables in the bin. Shops that sell vapes have to take back used vapes, including disposables, for recycling.
Questions people ask
What is the closest thing to a disposable vape?
A prefilled pod kit. It has the same auto-draw, mouth-to-lung feel and usually the same 20mg nic salt strength, but the battery is rechargeable and you swap the pods.
Is there an Elf Bar alternative that's legal?
Yes. Elf Bar's own ELFA Pro uses a rechargeable battery and prefilled pods. Any refillable pod kit with a 20mg nic salt will also feel similar.
Why does my new pod kit taste different from my old disposable?
Different coils, wicks and e-liquid recipes all change the taste. Give a new kit a few days. If it tastes burnt, the coil may not have been primed or the pod may be running dry.
What nicotine strength should I use after a disposable?
Most UK disposables were sold at 20mg nic salt, so that's the usual starting point. If it feels too strong, try 10mg.
