The smallest vapes you can legally buy in the UK are compact pod kits: either prefilled, where you click in sealed pods, or refillable, where you fill the pod from a bottle. Slim vape pens come close too. Since disposables were banned on 1 June 2025, these are what most people mean when they search for a small vape. You give up a bit of battery life for the size, but not liquid capacity, because every nicotine pod in the UK is capped at 2ml anyway.
Our vape kits hub covers every device type if you want the full picture.
Which types are smallest
| Type | Size | What it's like to carry |
|---|---|---|
| Compact prefilled pod kit | Smallest | Similar in size to an old disposable |
| Compact refillable pod kit | Small | Slightly bigger, flat, easy in any pocket |
| Slim vape pen | Narrow but long | Fits a jacket or bag pocket better than jeans |
| Pod mod | Medium | A handful, needs a proper pocket |
| Box mod | Large | Bag-sized, not a pocket vape |
If you want the full rundown of each, our types of vapes guide has it.
Why small doesn't mean less liquid

This trips people up. A tiny vape and a chunky one can hold exactly the same amount of e-liquid. Regulation 36 of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 limits any tank, cartridge or pod for nicotine e-liquid to 2ml. So pod capacity is rarely what makes a small vape small.
What shrinks is the battery. A smaller battery means more frequent charging, especially if you vape a lot or use the kit at higher power. For a light-to-moderate vaper on a tight MTL draw, that often doesn't matter much. For someone who vapes all day, it can mean charging mid-afternoon.
What you give up for a smaller vape
Here's what the smaller size costs you:
- Battery life. The main cost. Check whether a full charge covers your usual day.
- Fewer settings. Small kits tend to be auto-draw with fixed power, which most people actually prefer.
- Tighter draw. Compact kits are nearly always MTL. If you want big clouds, a small vape won't give you that. Our MTL vs DTL guide explains the difference.
- Pod lock-in. Most compact kits only take their own pods, so check those pods are easy to get.
Prefilled or refillable?
Both come in small sizes. The choice is about how you want to live with it.
Prefilled is the nearest thing to a disposable. No bottles, no filling, no coil changes. You swap a sealed pod and carry on. The downside is a smaller flavour choice and a higher running cost over time. Ranges currently sold in the UK include the Elf Bar ELFA Pro and Lost Mary BM6000. See the prefilled pod vape guide.
Refillable costs less to run and lets you use any compatible e-liquid. You'll fill the pod every day or two and change the pod or coil now and then. Popular compact ranges include the Uwell Caliburn G series, Vaporesso XROS series and OXVA Xlim series. The refillable pod vape guide covers the routine.
What to check before choosing a small vape
- Can you get the pods easily? A small kit is useless without them.
- Will the battery last your day? Think about how much you vape, not how much the box suggests.
- Do you like the draw? Adjustable airflow helps if you're not sure.
- Does it charge by USB-C? One less cable to carry.
- Does the strength suit you? Small MTL kits are built for nic salts, usually 10mg or 20mg. The nic salt vs freebase guide explains why.
A small vape for former disposable users
If you liked how light and simple a disposable was, a compact prefilled pod kit with a 20mg nic salt pod is the closest match. If you'd rather save money, a compact refillable kit gives you the same pocket size with more flavour choice. Our disposable vape alternative guide goes into the switch in more detail.
Small vapes are easy to leave lying around, so keep them away from children. It's illegal to sell vapes to anyone under 18 in the UK.
Questions people ask
What is the smallest type of vape?
Small prefilled pod kits and compact refillable pod kits are the smallest legal vapes in the UK. Slim vape pens are similar in size but longer.
Do small vapes hold less e-liquid?
Not necessarily. UK law caps any nicotine pod or tank at 2ml, so a small pod kit can hold as much as a bigger one. What you lose with a small device is usually battery size.
Are small disposable vapes still legal?
No. Single-use vapes have been banned from sale in the UK since 1 June 2025. A small vape now has to be rechargeable with replaceable pods or a refillable tank.
