Vape Pens: What They Are, How They Work and Who They Suit

A vape pen is a slim, pen-shaped nicotine vape with a battery tube and a tank or pod on top. How they work, who they suit and how they compare to pod kits.

A vape pen is a slim, cylindrical nicotine vape, roughly the size of a fat marker pen. The bottom half is a rechargeable battery tube. The top half is a small tank or pod that holds e-liquid and a coil. You fill it, charge it, press a button or just inhale, and it heats the liquid into vapour. Pens are simple, light and usually set up for a tight mouth-to-lung draw, which is why a lot of ex-smokers start on one.

One thing to clear up early. "Vape pen" also gets used for cannabis devices. This site is only about nicotine vaping. Cannabis and THC products are illegal in the UK, and we don't cover them.

How a vape pen works

Strip one down and you'll find four parts:

  • Battery tube. A rechargeable lithium battery inside a round tube, usually charged by USB.
  • Fire button or auto-draw sensor. Older pens fire when you press a button. Many newer ones also fire when you inhale.
  • Tank or pod. It sits on top and holds the e-liquid. In the UK a tank or pod for nicotine e-liquid can hold no more than 2ml, under regulation 36 of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.
  • Coil. A small heating element wrapped in cotton that soaks up the liquid. Coils wear out and get replaced.

When you draw, the battery sends power to the coil, the coil heats the soaked cotton, and you inhale the vapour.

Vape pen vs pod kit

These two get mixed up all the time, and fair enough. They're both small, both simple, and both aimed at people who don't want to fiddle with settings. The difference is mostly shape and how the liquid part attaches.

Vape pen Pod kit
Shape Round tube, pen-like Usually flat or oval
Liquid holder Screw-on tank, sometimes a pod Click-in pod, held by magnets
Coil Screws into the tank Built into the pod, or a plug-in coil
Draw Mostly MTL Mostly MTL, some RDL
Typical user Ex-smokers who like the cigarette-style shape Anyone wanting the simplest setup

Some recent devices blur the line, with a pen-shaped body that takes pods. If you're comparing the two in more detail, our pod vape kit guide explains how pods work, and types of vapes puts both in context with larger kits.

Who a vape pen suits

Pens make most sense if you:

  • Want something that feels a bit like holding a cigarette.
  • Prefer a tight, mouth-to-lung pull rather than big clouds.
  • Like the idea of a tank you fill yourself, where you can see the liquid level.
  • Want spare coils that are cheap and widely sold rather than replacing a whole pod.

They're a weaker fit if you want huge battery life (the tube limits how big the cell can be) or you want to vape low-strength liquid at high power. For that you'd look at a bigger kit. Our vape tank vs pod guide covers that trade-off.

Refillable pens and the disposable ban

Every legal vape pen in the UK now has to be reusable. The single-use vapes ban has stopped businesses selling single-use vapes since 1 June 2025. To be legal, a vape needs a rechargeable battery, a refillable or replaceable liquid container, and a replaceable coil.

A refillable pen ticks all three. You fill the tank from a 10ml bottle, recharge the battery and swap the coil when the flavour fades. We go into the setup, filling and coil changes in the refillable vape pen guide. The legal detail behind the ban is in our disposable vape ban guide.

What e-liquid goes in a vape pen?

Most pens run at low power with a fairly tight draw, so they suit:

  • Nic salts at 10mg or 20mg, which feel smoother at those strengths.
  • 50/50 freebase liquids, the traditional thinner liquid MTL kits were built around.

Thick, high-VG liquids can struggle to soak into small MTL coils, which leads to dry hits. If you're not sure which type you want, our nic salt vs freebase guide breaks it down. For flavour ideas, browse the flavour range.

Looking after a vape pen

A few habits keep a pen working properly:

  1. Prime new coils. Drip a few drops onto the exposed cotton, fill the tank and leave it for five to ten minutes before vaping.
  2. Don't let the tank run dry. Vaping on an empty tank scorches the cotton and you'll taste it straight away.
  3. Wipe the threads. A bit of liquid on the battery connection is normal. Give it a wipe now and then so the contact stays clean.
  4. Swap coils when the taste dulls. A burnt or muted taste usually means the coil is done.
  5. Charge with the right cable. Use the cable that came with the kit or a good-quality replacement, and don't leave it charging unattended overnight.

Old pens and spare parts

When a pen or its coils reach the end, don't put them in the household bin. Vapes are electrical waste, and shops that sell vapes have to take old ones back. The how to recycle vapes guide covers your options.

Is a vape pen right for you?

A vape pen is a round, simple, refillable nicotine vape with a tank on a battery tube. It's a good pick if you like a cigarette-style shape and a tight draw. If you'd rather click in a pod and forget about it, a pod kit is the easier route. Either way, it's for adults who already use nicotine.

Questions people ask

What is a vape pen?

A vape pen is a slim, cylindrical vape about the size of a marker pen. It has a battery tube at the bottom and a small tank or pod on top that holds e-liquid and a coil.

Is a vape pen the same as a pod kit?

Not quite. Both are small and simple, but a vape pen is round and usually takes a screw-on tank, while a pod kit is flatter and takes a click-in pod. Some newer pen-shaped devices use pods, so the line is blurry.

Are vape pens legal in the UK?

Refillable, rechargeable vape pens are legal for adults. Single-use pen-shaped disposables are not, because single-use vapes have been banned from sale in the UK since 1 June 2025.

Does PopVapor cover cannabis or THC vape pens?

No. Cannabis and THC products are illegal in the UK and we don't cover them. Every vape pen on this site means a nicotine vape used with regulated e-liquid.
